My mother spent the greater part of her early twenties in and out of hospital visits. While few of them were for here, they were all centered around someone else: me. I was born premature and had an extra electrode in my heart that caused it to beat too fast, which created a great deal of complications for me and worry for my family.
I don’t remember being sick, but she does. We both lived it, but I no longer feel the weight of it, I only know to count my blessings and be grateful for the healthy heart inside of my chest each and every day.
Because of this, our philanthropic efforts focus on helping children. We’re constantly using this store to find new brands and new ways to donate to organizations that support the health and safety of children.
A few months back, we found a beautiful new one. We began offering Headbands of Hope because of how beautiful their vision is. For every headband sold, we’re able to donate a headband to a child with cancer. In June, we were able to hand deliver about 100 headbands to children in our community.
We were invited to Nemours Children’s Hospital twice in the beginning of June, and arrived with significantly more than just one headband for every one we sold. Our first event took place on the oncology floor of the Nemours Children’s Hospital in downtown Jacksonville. These kids were a little nervous about us, some so skeptical that you had to walk the headbands over to them before they could choose a color and crack a smile, but the reaction was always worth it.
Later on in the week, we brought the same set up of pink and teal flower crowns to a children’s parade/fundraiser for the kids. Here, we were fortunate enough to be placed next to the face-painters and the photo booth, and these kids were stoked. One girl saw flower crowns and ran up to us with such fervor that she jumped right up at the edge of the table and almost knocked the display into my lap.
In both settings we found ourselves tying headbands on to little girls or watching young boys pick out headbands to wear as necklaces or give to their moms. The whole experience felt so pure. There was a sweetness that grew with every knot of a flower crown, reminding us why we’re really doing what we do.
